Memorial Oval has been a fixture in the local community for 102 years, from the early days when just a handful of local cricket teams used the newly constructed sportsground to now, where 18 cricket teams, sporting associations, and schools utilise the same sports ground – albeit with upgraded amenities.
Bankstown Sports has supported the teams who play there and ensured the upkeep of the ground and its facilities for more than 65 years.
For the past 20 years, Bankstown Sports has supported Bankstown District Cricket Club with over $50,000 in yearly funding, increasing to a yearly subsidy of $150,000 in 2005.
The club provides an additional $20,000 yearly subsidy to the junior cricket club who use the oval for the training and development of grade coaches, who train younger players.
In 1999, Bankstown Sports contributed $250,000 towards the construction of the Steve and Mark Waugh Pavilion and the Kevin McCormick Public Grandstand.
Between 2006-2024, Bankstown Sports has supported the Uganda Project which is run by Bankstown Cricket Club and provides pre-loved cricket equipment and sports uniforms, school uniforms, and classroom resources, to kids in Africa.
In 2008, Bankstown Sports provided $200,000 to support the development of the John Mackay Indoor Sports Centre at Memorial Oval which is able to accommodate men’s and women’s teams, junior cricket programs, school programs, and a wide range of inclusive cricket programs. It is also the home base for the NSW Blind Cricket Association.
Bankstown Sports has also contributed significant funding to get the women’s cricket game off the ground in the local area, increasing our financial support by 100 per cent from
2021-22.
One of our proudest achievements over the years has been the formation of the All-Abilities Cricket program, in conjunction with the Recreation, Sports and Aquatic Centre in Bankstown.
And in early 2023, Bankstown Sports finalised its share of the funding with the state government for the much-needed upgrade of the cricket ground with a total investment of $1.5M.
Bankstown District Cricket Club President Reza Bilimoria -
"The support provided by Bankstown Sports Club over six and a half decades has empowered us to develop a community organisation with a reach beyond our sport and geographic home. As a club, we are immensely proud of the facilities we’ve developed and the amazing players like Steve and Mark Waugh, who have distinguished our club and community.
Bankstown Sports Club is extremely proud of the work that’s been put into Memorial Oval and the teams who play there, and we will continue to support the growth and development of the ground in years to come.
